Mobile Computing

Many modern portable appliances incorporate Internet access, but this poses particular design and development problems. Small screen sizes require a different layout and relative sizing in order to remain usable.

This can be achieved by adhering to current standards and implementing CSS to control the presentation of the page. The handheld media type can be used to declare a mobile specific stylesheet.

This page can be viewed on a small screen device where many styling features have been altered to improve usability by on a mobile device.

Another approach is to build a mobile specific site designed with the mobile user and the mobile context in mind. This does mean managing multiple versions of a site and poses the dilemma of device detection in order to drive traffic to the mobile site as required.

The choice of approach will depend on the contents and requirements of the site being developed.
